Notable Events[]
Walter was a tall, strong, muscular man, who Dennis was imprisoned with. He went by a nickname, as was common in the prison. The two were friendly, and one day, while chopping potatoes in the kitchen, Walter confided in Dennis about his true name, and the insecurities he felt about it being "soft". Sharing the name was a vulnerable act, and meant as a gesture of trust.[1]
Four days later, Dennis told other inmates Walter's name, using it to mock him and gain social currency. Walter no longer spoke to Dennis, and months later, was chosen to be a sacrifice, to be buried under concrete in a new compound that is being built. (Sacrifices are chosen seemingly randomly, though Dennis suggests that there is some amount of doctoring that occurs when the selections are made). Dennis is shocked at Walter being called, and is even more shocked when the inmates collectively mock Walter, spitting his name insultingly at him, as he's tased and dragged away.[1]
Dennis admits he often thought of Walter as he walked over that concrete. He does not outright say so, but there is a suggestion he feels guilt.[1]
